Beauty of Greek islands, homeland of Odyssey, Italian towns of Sicily, and a big jump across the Ionian sea in between

Two countries, and a great sail over the Ionian sea. The crossing requires coordinated teamwork, night and day shifts along the way, but that’s what we love in sailing.

First things first. We’re going to cross the Ionian sea, and it’s a jump of 2-3 days. So we’ll need to wait for a favourable wind. That’s why we may have more Greece and less Italy, and may have the opposite.

What’s on the Greek side? Famous beaches and sandy rocks of Zakynthos, diversity of Kethalonia, and famous Ithaca with a newly discovered Odyssey palace. And maybe even a lost old monastery of Strofades, lost in a small bare rocky island the middle of the sea.

What’s on Italian side? When we cross the sea we probably go to Syracuse, Sicily, the Italian city that was founded by Greeks around 734 B.C. and that Cicero called “the greatest and most beautiful of all Grecian cities”, then influenced a lot by Cartagene, Arabs, Venetians, Turks, and even Normanns.

The endpoint will be Catania, a big city near Etna volcano and national park.
