A big ocean passage and fjords sailing to the remote villages next to the Arctic circle
This stage takes the most of the North Atlantic sailing in the perfect season. Spectacular cliffs of Faroes, 250 miles offshore passage, and the most remote villages of North-East Iceland, up to the Polar Circle. And lot of chances to watch the whales.
Sorvagur [FAE] is the only airport in the Faroes archipelago, and is 30 minutes by bus or taxi from the capital, Torshavn. Most flights arrive from Copenhagen (5 per day), though there other destinations as well (check https://www.atlantic.fo/ for details).
Akureyri Airport [AEY] is connected to domestic Reykjavik Airport [RKV]. There are 4 flights per day operated by Icelandair, and the flight takes only 40 minutes. (All international flights arrive to Reykjavik International Airport [KEF], but the transfer between domestic and international airports is really easy.) Akureyri is also connected with Reykjavik with several daily buses.
Coastal Exploration:
Arctic Encounters:
We mark the difficulty of this stage as 4 out of 5.
Delving into the rugged fjords and secluded villages of Iceland’s eastern coast, where towering peaks meet the sea in a mesmerizing display of natural grandeur. From Eskifjörður to Vopnafjörður, each stop offers a glimpse into Iceland’s remote and untamed wilderness.
Our journey culminates with a visit to Grímsey Island, located on the Arctic Circle. Here, amidst sweeping vistas and pristine landscapes, we’ll witness an array of Arctic wildlife, including whales, seabirds, and perhaps even the elusive polar bear.
That means you should be prepared for the challenging conditions. It comes with the possibilities of a strong wind, big waves, low temperature, and offshore passages for a couple of days.
Talking about this exact stage: first, we’ll make a 2-days offshore passage in the open Arctic waters. That’s not all: after that we’ll round several Icelandic capes during shorter passages, that is at times tricky due to the swell and currents, and windy at times.
Embarking on an Arctic Odyssey:
